Encrypting Documents Using 7zip
All documents containing sensitive or confidential data must be encrypted prior to transmission through e-mail or storage on removable media, devices or systems of any type.
Document Encryption using 7-Zip
7-Zip is freely-available and open source, and is available for multiple platforms including Windows, Linux/Unix, and Mac OS X. It supports a "strong" encryption method (AES-256) which is also compatible with the strong encryption method used by the popular WinZIP utility. The 7-Zip utility can also be used to create and extract standard non-encrypted ZIP archives.
To create an encrypted archive, launch the "7-Zip File Manager" from your Start menu and navigate to the folder containing your documents to be encrypted. Select the documents to be encrypted, holding the "control" key when clicking to select more than one file. Click the "+" icon from the toolbar:
From the "Add to Archive" window, be sure to select the following options:
- Archive Format: Zip
- In the Encryption box, enter a secure password
- Encryption Method: AES-256
Click “OK” when complete. The ZIP archive will be created in the same folder as your source documents.
